Genetic and Autoimmune Conditions:
The most common type also known as male or female pattern baldness. This is hereditary and can begin at any age.
An autoimmune disorder where the immune system mistakenly attacks hair follicles, leading to patchy hair loss. It can also involve total scalp hair loss (alopecia totalis) even total body hair loss (alopecia universalis).
Alopecia areata is often linked to other autoimmune conditions like thyroid disease, vitiligo, and lupus.
Hormonal and Systemic Issues:

Both an overactive and underactive thyroid can disrupt the hair growth cycle. - Hormonal Changes:
Pregnancy, Childbirth, and perimenopause and menopause can cause temporary hair loss.
Stress and Psychological Factors:
- Telogen Effluvium:
Significant shedding that can be triggered by a stressful event, such as surgery, severe illness, emotional shock or high fever. - Trichotillomania:
A compulsive disorder where people pull out their own hair, creating bald spots.
Medications and Other Causes:
- Medications:
Certain drugs, including some used for cancer (chemotherapy and radiation), can cause significant hair loss. - Scalp Conditions:
Dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis can sometimes impede hair growth. - Infections:
Some infections, like syphilis, can cause patchy hair loss. - Scarring Alopecia:
A group of conditions where inflammation destroys the hair follicle, leading to permanent hair loss.
Physical and Chemical Trauma:
- Traumatic Alopecia
Hair loss caused by physical or chemical damage from tight hairstyles, excessive brushing/styling and overuse of high heat hairstyling tools, allergic reactions to chemicals. - Friction:
Hair loss can occur from constant rubbing against tight clothing or accessories, known as frictional alopecia.
